The Statewide Macro File is an aggregation of Macro File records for all counties to show a statewide total for quarterly data by industry and ownership.  The file is created "from scratch", using a presorted version of the Macro File for input data.  These sorted, sequential records are read into an aggregation program, which writes summed data to statewide records and merges the disclosability-related fields, such as the largest firm data.  The aggregate records are then used to populate the VSAM State Macro File.

Whenever aggregates of macro records are used, the disclosability detection may occasionally experience an inaccuracy.  For instance, if one firm has worksites in several counties, and usually, but not always, represents the largest employment for that industry in those counties, there is a chance that the statewide totals will misrepresent the percentage of total employment represented by this firm.  If that misrepresented percentage falls just below 80%, when in actuality the firm does have 80% of the employment statewide, the data would incorrectly be shown as disclosable.  Such borderline cases are rare, though they can occur.

The Statewide Macro File is accessed by the ES2D CICS screen when no county or MSA is included in the selection parameters at the bottom of the screen.  By utilizing this file, ES2D is able to handle any statewide totaling request at many times the speed required in reading the standard Macro File.  As a result, there should rarely be any problems with CICS time-out errors (due to excessive I/O activities).  The Statewide Macro File is rebuilt in Jobs ES2J241D and ES2J242D, which can be run whenever they are needed.
