NAICS-02 and 2007 NAICS Conflict Check - Code 017

The NAICS-02 code is a quarterly-occurrence field placed in the Micro File record especially for the 2007 NAICS revision. It denotes the final 2002-based NAICS code prior to conversion to the 2007-based NAICS coding standard. The 017 code edit has been established strictly for the 2007 refiling cycle to ensure that only valid combinations of 2002-to-2007 NAICS codes are used throughout the year, especially in the 07/1 quarter. The edit will not be in use until the 07/1 quarter’s processing.

The following conditions will bypass this edit from being checked:

For eligible establishments, any of the following conditions can flag the condition; these include:

Expressed as a narrative, the above conditions say that: an invalid final 2002-based NAICS code will flag the edit; a blank NAICS or a blank NAICS-02 field will flag this edit; an unmatched, non-classified (all 9’s) NAICS code in either field will flag the edit; and an invalid 2002-to-2007 NAICS pairing (between the NAICS02 and current NAICS field) will flag the edit.

When identified, this error will flag both the NAICS and the ownership code for review. Since this is a crucial error, it must be corrected to prevent it from reappearing on each subsequent edit report. BLS classification: A.1.2 or B.1.3 (depending on size of establishment). EXPO “G” code: A017 or B017.
