A-B-C List Prioritization Scheme

The following is the prioritization list, under the Gross Errors classification of edit exceptions. It shows the relative importance of conditions in all of the editing sub-systems and how they interrelate. The columns are: Rank, EXPO “G” code (‘GCd’), BLS classification (‘BLS’), and edit condition description. The rank is a sequential number for relative severity of the condition.

Note: When both macro and micro records have the same error code, the micro takes precedence over the macro in this severity table; macros are not listed separately in the list below.

The EXPO “G” code combines the “A”, “B”, or “C” letter (with some exceptions where the BLS codes could cause sorting conflicts), and the original 3-digit error code number. Some edits are not performed in EXPO. Those that can appear in the EXPO edits with a “G” code are in bold characters. The BLS classification is composed of three parts: the A, B, or C group letter, the edit class code, and the edit sub-class code. Edit classes and sub-classes include:

A.1.1 = B.1.2 = C.1.2 - Pre-Edits;
A.1.2 = B.1.3 - Key Field Edits;
A.1.3 = B.1.4 = C.1.4 - Dates and Status Code Edits;
A.1.4 = B.1.5 = C.1.6 = Remaining Invalid Error Edits;
A.1.5 = B.1.6 = Significant Employment and Wage Micro and Summed Level Edits
A.1.6 = B.1.7 = C.1.8 = Warning and Other Summed Level Edits
A.2.8 = Multi-Establishment Edits
B.2.7 = Predecessor / Successor Edits
C.2.9 = Identical Monthly Employment Edit
C.3.10 = Missing EIN
C.4.9 = Wage Record Edits

Note: The A-B-C prioritization structure is reviewed periodically. It will likely be modified in future versions, as the value and significance of each edit is re-evaluated. The current use of dual-level coding, depending upon the size of the employer, may be discontinued eventually. If so, all error codes that could be considered an “A”-level error for a large establishment will become an “A” classification for all establishments. If applied, it could significantly skew both A-list reports and edit scoring.
