Agent Code (IMT-AGENT-CODE)

The agent code is a 4-byte field found in positions 98 to 101. An agent is generally a payroll service provider such as “Paychex”, etc. State-specific values are assigned to identify these agents. A change to this field is that it now occurs quarterly. Since there is only the single (i.e., administrative) occurrence of this field here, it will be forwarded to the most recent quarter identified in the IMT data. Even if the specific record carrying an agent code contains nothing in that most recent quarter, the assignment can still be made from other records that show the arrangement of the quarters throughout the file. If the field is used, it should contain a numeric agent code as its legitimate value. There is no editing of this field, so it is only for the State’s benefit that codes are entered. If no payroll provider agent is used by the company, this field should be left as low-values.

Note: The agent code is not automatically copied to subsequent quarters, as is the case with quarterly codes. This is a BLS requirement. The agent must therefore be entered at least once per quarter for all accounts that use agents (usually on the first extract of the new quarter). The QUEST system has set this up for up to a 10-digit Agent Code; this is not possible, however, with this 4-digit indicator.
