SIC Code (IMTQ-SIC(1))

The “quarterly” Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the most recent IMT quarter is a 4-byte field found in positions 704 - 707. Although valid SIC values are still tracked, using the 1987 coding standards, this field is no longer maintained. So it is not necessary to determine the valid SIC code for any new establishments. Instead, BLS has recommended that all new records be coded with an SIC code of ‘9999’.

If the SIC code is available on the State Tax File (or other source files), it can be transferred to the IMT record and will be transferred to the Micro File record as well. If it is unavailable (as is the norm), or if the value is unchanged from previous extracts (which should virtually always be the case), leave this field as low-values. The interface system will assign the ‘9999’ code for a new account that has no specified SIC. Existing establishments will remain unchanged.

Note: The SIC code is no longer a quarterly-occurrence item on the Micro File; it will be transferred to the administrative SIC code, regardless of the identified quarter in the IMT data.
