Sub-County Zone or Township Code (IMTQ-ZONE(1))

The current quarter's sub-county zone field is 4 bytes in length, located at positions 709 - 712 in the IMT record. It is used to identify sub-county geographical areas for more precise statistical reporting. In the case of States in the New England area, this field is subdivided into IMTQ-TOWN(1) (a 3-byte field with numeric values in New England States) and IMTQ-TOWN-EXT(1) (a 1-byte field for filler or an optional numeric extension to a non-New England pseudo-township code for further refining the area definitions).

The use of the sub-county zone field is optional. The township code, however, is required for the New England States which have defined township areas. Township codes are also verified in the State's Lookup Table File (part of the exportable system), to make certain not only that the township code is in use in the State, but that it is valid to be used for the county. States that do not have townships but do have zones may wish to implement this verification as well. This is also an available option.

If the zone/township field is not used, if it is unknown, or if it is not changed by this IMT record, it should be left as low-values. New accounts without specified zone codes will receive appropriate default values according to the State's use of zones or township codes. Attempts to alter the township field in mid-year, without an accompanying flagging of economic significance (through the IMTQ-ECON-CODE-CHG-IND(1) (to be described shortly), will be rejected by the EXPO IMT interface program.
