Job ES2J025D - 13-Month Firm List

RUN THIS JOB - As required.

This job executes the following programs (click to link to each program description):

Job Features and Functions

  • Produces a 13-month NAICS-based firm list at 6-digit NAICS level
  • Selects records from Micro File for 13-month firm list (even though the Micro File has just 24 months of data present)
    • Report displays 13 consecutive months of Micro File employment
    • Report references code changes, new & terminated records
  • Primary use of report is for CES benchmarking (even though CES data are processed on an entirely separate platform)

Job 025D produces a 13-month Firm List Report, designed as a CES benchmark tool. The report includes monthly employment data by individual establishment on the Micro File for a consecutive 13-month period of time. The report can be produced on either a statewide basis in Ownership (descending order) and Industry (ascending order) sequence, on a county by county basis in Ownership/NAICS sequence within county, or for a single MSA.

The report defaults to a 6-digit level of detail. However, a report can be generated for a single Industry category at 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-digit NAICS level. Since Ownership codes, County codes, and NAICS codes are stored by quarter on the Micro File for each individual record, an establishment may appear on this firm listing more than once. This would occur if the establishment changed ownership, county, or NAICS during the 13-month period of time referenced by the report. In this case, the establishment would appear within each ownership, Industry, or county group in which it may have existed during the 13-month reference period. The report includes comments for establishments that changed codes, began operations, and terminated operations. In the case of a code change, a notation of previous code or new code is made for user reference.

This job will optionally produce a data file. If the file option is selected, 15 months of employment data are included, rather than the 13 months included on the report.

The year and quarter parameters specified in ES2N determine the earliest full quarter's data included on the report. The report includes the three months of employment in the specified year/quarter, plus the third month employment of the prior quarter, along with the monthly employment of the subsequent three quarters. Only single and multi-subunit records, which were active during any part of the 13-month reference period, are included on the report. If a quarter and year are specified which cause the 13-month reference period to exceed the quarters stored on the Micro File, the report will still run, but those months not on the micro file will be blank and no headings will appear for them.
