Function Keys Used in ES2D

The following function key definitions are in effect for the ES2D screen. F1 returns control to the ES2B menu screen. F3 is the standard system exit to native mode or a State-defined control program. F5 reads previous macro aggregate, while F6 reads the next aggregate. F7 and F8 browse through the previous and next eight micro records for display, respectively. F9 toggles between inquiry and editing mode. Again, editing mode uses the Macro Edit File and Micro Edit File as drivers, while the inquiry mode keys off the Macro File and Micro Files. F10 toggles the field to the right of the micro SESA ID between prior quarter third month employment and the comment codes for the current quarter. F11 cycles through the three wage-related fields in both the macro and micro data displays, ranging through total wages, taxable wages and contributions. The F12 key acts as a toggle to/from the ES2F screen.

One aspect of the F6 key is that it can be used as an initiator when first entering ES2D. The entry fields start out blank. If you press F6 by itself, the screen will show the first available macro cell, with quarters defaulted to start with the current quarter. If the macro data have not been updated for the current quarter yet, the first row of macro totals will appear as zeroes. From this initial setting, you can enter whatever values best suit you (switching to the prior quarter if no current data have arrived, changing ownership codes, or toggling to macro editing mode with the F9 key).

An important aspect of the F5 and F6 keys is that they respect the current NAICS aggregation level. If the 6-digit NAICS level is currently in effect, these keys switch to the prior or next macro cell display. However, when a higher-level industry aggregation has been selected (5-digit, 4-digit, 3-digit (sub-sector), or 2-digit (sector)), that level will be maintained (going backward/forward to the previous/next sector, sub-sector, etc., for the same county and ownership). For instance, if you have selected NAICS ‘2381’, the F6 key will advance to ‘2382’, ‘2383’, ‘2389’, ‘3111’, etc.

There are two caveats with the higher-level scrolling process. First, higher-level aggregates use an industry “wrap-around” feature. For instance, using the F6 key with sub-sectors will skip from ‘999’ to ‘111’. Second, high-level aggregation retention with F5/F6 does not work for SIC-based processing. In addition, O-N-C states (processing by industry rather than by county) will not be able to use the higher-level aggregate maintenance feature. The level-hold feature only functions when the NAICS is the lowest-level sorting criterion.
