The Alpha Locator File is a VSAM-indexed file, used to find an establishment's U-I account number from the trade or legal name.  Program  ES2UT08 collects data from the Micro File to generate a sequential Alpha Locator File in SESA ID sequence.  Both the legal/corporate name and the DBA/trade name are used in establishing Alpha Locator records.  If a firm has both names, one record will be written for each name, so that either can be used as a search parameter.  If both names are identical, only one record is written to represent the common name.  Should both names be blank, no record is written for the establishment. These records are sorted alphabetically in order to rebuild the VSAM File.  This update should take place periodically throughout the quarter, on a weekly to monthly basis, through submittal of Job ES2J050D, depending on the level of name change activity and the importance of up-to-date alpha data.  The file is also rebuilt automatically in the quarterly data extraction process of Job ES2J001Q.

The file is accessed on a read-only basis by CICS transaction ES2S, which displays boxes containing the name, U-I account number, address, and various indicator codes (MEEI, county, etc.).  A firm can be singled out for further examination in the ES2C and other CICS screens as well.
