Enhanced Micro Output File Data Set Name: ES2.V9E.MICRO.COPY Service Center DSN: YBUssX.A145.V9E.MICRO.COPY, ('ss' = State FIPS code) Type of File: Sequential File Layout: ES2EMIC The Enhanced Micro (EMIC) Output File is essentially the same as the standard Micro File, except that all of the fields that had been compressed, either by packing or conversion to binary format, have been re-expanded. This causes the expanded version of the file to have over 22% longer records than the production Micro File. The EMIC File is most useful for States in developing more modern extract programs or for running external queries on micro-level data. The standard Micro File is difficult to use in a PC transfer due to the compressed fields; these often will not translate correctly, or can cause additional problems in external processing. The Enhanced Micro File has no compressed fields, so can be readily processed on any platform. Job 076E has been developed to convert the Micro File to the Enhanced Micro format. This job can be run at any time. The output file can be FTP'ed to the PC/LAN and processed from there. Due to the expanded size, such FTP's will take a considerable amount of time. The file can also be written to a tape cartridge, which can be uploaded to another mainframe (if the job is run at SunGard, but the data are needed on a local mainframe, for instance). |
