Comment Code Check - Code 048
A micro comment code can be attached to any quarter of an account’s micro data. This edit validates each of up to three comment codes for both edited quarters against the list of valid codes in the Lookup File comment code records (record key ‘CM’). This table’s data are translated into a working storage array during the micro edit program’s initialization phase. Any comment code that is found to be invalid will be flagged and underscored in the edit report.
Periodically the list of valid comment codes will change, as definitions are altered and the need arises to insert or rescind codes from the list. For instance, in Version 6.0, codes 39 and 92 were added to address pertinent coding issues. These are sometimes dealt with through new Lookup File conversion programs. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary for each state to identify the comment code changes manually through entries in the ES2L screen.
Invalid comment codes are considered a crucial-level condition which refuses to set the edit flag to a completed status until the comment codes are properly addressed. BLS classification: C.1.6. EXPO “G” code: C048.
