U-I Address State Abbreviation Check - Code 107

This edit verifies that the U-I tax address State postal abbreviation represents a recognized code, either one of the 50 States, DC, PR (Puerto Rico), VI (US Virgin Islands), CN (Canada), AA (APO Atlantic), AE (APO Eastern), AP (APO Pacific), AS (American Samoa), or GU (Guam). Spaces in the State code are valid if the rest of the address block is also blank. If the city or one of the two street address lines is non-blank, but the State code is blank, it is also an error condition. However, Federal government employers (with ownership code ‘10’) do not need to show a valid State postal abbreviation.

Since the U-I address is the lowest form of address in the edits, the other two address blocks (physical and U-I) are edited first. If it turns out that one of these other addresses is present and contains no flagged conditions (i.e., is “usable”), edits on the U-I address are skipped. It becomes immaterial what deficiencies may exist in the U-I address when one of the “higher ranking” addresses can pass successfully through the edits. Hence this edit will be checked only when the U-I address is the only address block available, or when errors have been found in any other addresses present for the account.

For all editable accounts, an invalid State code, or a blank State code in a non-blank address block, flags the U-I State field as unusable and causes it to appear in the edit exception report as well as on the ES2E edit screen. BLS classification: C.1.8. EXPO “G” code: C107.
