Fax Phone Number Format Check - Code 112

This edit is designed to spot invalid facsimile (fax) machine phone numbers, but it needs to exempt many or most of the employers to begin with. First of all, Federal (ownership code ‘10’) accounts are bypassed, as are worksites (with a reporting unit number greater than zero). Next, the AME must exceed the cutoff parameter specified in the Lookup File via the PK005 record, described near the beginning of this appendix. If the preliminary conditions disallow an account from being edited, processing skips to the next exception. Otherwise, the fax number format edit takes effect, as described in two paragraphs.

Prior to conducting the edit, a pre-screening of the fax phone number contents is conducted as well. If the fax number is all zeroes, or if the last seven digits are zero, the entire ten-digit number is changed to spaces. Then, if the fax phone number had already been blank, or if it was just converted to spaces, this edit is skipped, inapplicable to blank fax numbers.

The first type of unusable fax phone number is one with 555-1212 listed, regardless of the area code. This signifies a directory information number, having nothing to do with the establishment itself (in fact, all ‘555’ exchange numbers are reserved for phone company usage, which is why Hollywood always uses them in the movies). The second sub-edit is for the exchange code (the first three digits of the phone number after the area code); these digits are not allowed to be set to zero. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, if the suffix was also zeroes, the entire number would have been blanked. So this would constitute a number such as 000-1234. Third, the area code must be numeric unless it is set to spaces. Fourth, the suffix cannot be non-numeric unless it is blank. The other type of unacceptable fax number format is all digits the same (seven 1’s, seven 2’s, etc.).

If any of these conditions exists for an editable account, it will flag the fax phone number to appear in the edit exception report along with this edit code. For conditions such as this that are found for ineligible employers (without sufficient employment), will have the condition corrected by clearing out the fax number (setting it to spaces). BLS classification: C.1.8. EXPO “G” code: C112.
