Check Digit (IMT-CK-DIGIT)

The account check digit is a 1-digit numeric field, located at position 16 in the record. This is considered an optional field, since many States either do not use a check digit or have the check digit embedded as part of the U-I account number. In such cases, the check digit field should be set to zero or low-values, rather than repeating the value here, requiring redundant data entry.

A check digit is generally designed as an aid to prevent mistyping of account numbers. Transposed digits, missed digits, and other common mistakes in entry of account numbers can be recognized through the computation of the check digit from the account number digits, then comparing this value to the check digit entered. Unfortunately, most of the advantages of the check digit are lost in the exportable system. Since there are many different methods for computing the check digit, no algorithm has been established for check digit computation in the exportable system.

If the check digit is specified, it will be edited only to make sure it is numeric. If the check digit is left as low-values on a new account, it will be defaulted to zero by the ES2MI01 program. Remember, this field should only be set if your state uses a check digit that is not incorporated in the account number itself.
