Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) (IMT-EIN)

This is the employer's Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as the federal ID number. It is a digit field, located at positions 17 - 25. This should be a taxpayer ID number, rather than a social security number for domestics (NAICS 841110). Only specific values are valid for the first two digits of the EIN, which represents a code number for the IRS office (or district) issuing the number. Invalid starter digits include 00 (except when the whole EIN is zeroes), 07, 08, 09, 17, 18, 19, 28, 29, 49, 70, 78, 79, and 89. If the EIN of the employer is known, it should be provided in this field. If it is unknown, or if you are generating a change transaction that does not affect the EIN, leave the field as low-values. New accounts without EIN’s will be defaulted to zeroes by the ES2MI01 interface program. It is important to determine the Employer Identification Number as soon as possible.
