Legal Name (IMT-LEGAL-NAME)

The legal/corporate name is a 35-byte alphanumeric field, located at positions 26 - 60. For single accounts and multiple-worksite subunits, this is often considered the secondary name. For multi-worksite master accounts it is the primary name.

This field is the official, legal name of the firm, the controlling corporation name, or, for a smaller company or private contractor, the name of the individual owning the company. In this case, the company name under which the individual is doing business—or the commonly recognized name of the firm—should be placed in the DBA/Trade Name field (which is described next).

For a new firm, this field should be filled in as is appropriate for the firm. For existing firms, this field should remain unchanged most often, and hence should be left as low-values.
