Trade Name (IMT-TRADE-NAME)

This is the employer's "doing business as" name or trade name, a 35-byte alphanumeric field, located at positions 61 - 95. This field should contain the company name under which an individual or corporation is doing business. It should not be used as a continuation of the legal/corporate name, or as a referral name, such as "Attn:" or "care of." Attention or contact names should be placed in IMT-ATTENTION-NAME (described later). Often business names will not fit completely in the space provided. In such cases, the names should be abbreviated or otherwise represented in a more compact form. Since this is difficult to perform programmatically, it may be necessary to truncate longer names. After these have been manually adjusted by the analysts in the QCEW unit, they can be locked via a multiple-field locking indicator, so that incomplete tax file name information will not override manual corrections.

For a new firm, the Trade Name should be supplied, if it is known. If it is not known, or if the account is pre-existent on the Micro File, this field should be left as low-values. When only one name field is available for an account, but no identification is available to distinguish the name as a legal or trade name, that name should be placed here rather than in the legal name. The only exception to this rule would be for a multi-worksite master account, which is expected to have a legal/corporate name present.
