Maximum Report Unit Number (RUN) (IMT-MAX-RPT-UNIT)

The maximum reporting unit number is a 5-character field found at positions 642 - 646. This value is needed only for master accounts, showing the highest-numbered reporting unit of any worksite ever assigned to the family. For single accounts and worksite records this field has no relevance, so it is not needed. However, certain accounts can vacillate between single and multi-site status. In such a case the maximum reporting unit value should be maintained even when the worksites are terminated for the eventuality that the account could once more become a multi-worksite family.

BLS regulations require that any reporting unit number that is inactivated not be reused for a period of at least five years. Though there is no reasonable way of maintaining that degree of historical data to ensure the non-reuse of RUN's for that time span, the maximum reporting unit field provides a quick reference for the QCEW analyst. The next available unit number can be assigned for new worksite additions, avoiding the potential complexity of the re-usage issue.

Due to the difficulty in ascertaining this value directly, the system interface process will handle this field's processing without the need for user intervention. Therefore, the maximum reporting unit field should be left as low-values for all accounts.
