Job Features and Functions

  • Creates NAICS publication structure file that appears in ES2U screen
  • Subsequent to creating the publication file with 248D, the file can be modified or fine-tuned with the ES2U screen
  • The NAICS Publication File is used by Job 244D to produce a camera-ready report or create a data file
  • Parameters allow 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- and/or 6-digit NAICS detail
  • Pulls short NAICS titles from Lookup File
  • Parameters allow 1, 2 ,3, 5, G (all government), S (State and local government) or X (all ownerships) for ownership column

Job 248D creates a global set of parameters for a NAICS-based publication that can be printed from the 244D job. Lookup File records are utilized to obtain the descriptions of all NAICS records at the desired aggregation levels (sector (2-digit), sub-sector (3-digit), 4-digit, 5-digit, or 6-digit NAICS values). Publication records are generated for every one of the NAICS records, complete with appropriate descriptions. These can be useful for publications that need to be more far-reaching than just a few specific industries.

The industry detail of the publication structure table determines the content of the publication report. Job 248D is essentially a labor saving tool to eliminate the need to hand-enter each industry or line item in the publication structure table on the ES2U screen. While some hand adjustments may have to be made to the publication structure table in ES2U after this job is run, it nevertheless builds the majority of the publication structure table.

The parameters of the job allow for any combination of 2, 3, 4, 5, and/or 6 digit NAICS codes to be selected. Also, 1, 2, 3, 5, G, S, or X can be specified for the ownership column in the table. Headers, footers, totals, including group and sector totals, cannot be entered via Job 248D; they must be entered via the ES2U screen. As the job runs, it builds individual line entries in the Publication Structure File at the level of industry detail selected in the parameters. As each line entry is created, a short industry description is pulled from the Lookup File and also included in the Publication Structure File along with the industry code and specified ownership code. After the initial creation of the Publication Structure File with Job 248D, the ES2U screen can be used to refine the contents of the file. Additional lines, such as totals, can be added and existing lines can be deleted. In addition, title lines and footer lines can be added to finish the table and make it ready for publication. The Publication Structure File is saved under a publication ID number. It can be re-used to produce the same report again for different time periods, as specified in the Job 244D parameters.

Note: This process does not take into consideration when a NAICS code is valid. For example, it will show NAICS codes 311314 and 311320 with the same description.
