Telephone Number Format Check - Code 105

This edit ascertains whether the phone number is in an acceptable format. Prior to editing the phone number, a default value of all blanks will be set if the whole phone number is zero, or the last seven digits are zero. Also before the edit is employed, four preconditions are checked. If any of the following is true, the edit is not conducted:

  • 1. The ownership code is ‘10’ (Federal), which covers a multitude of sins.
  • 2. The establishment is a worksite (RUN > zero); the worksites are not held responsible for phone number errors.
  • 3. The AME falls at or below the PK005 cutoff level.
  • 4. The phone number is blank (or has just been made blank by the defaulting mechanism noted at the beginning of this description).

However, if a smaller establishment (with AME ≤ PK005) is found to have an unusable phone number format (according to the editing rules described next), it will have the phone number blanked out.

Now we have only those accounts not exempted by the conditions outlined above. Four types of phone number conditions can cause these accounts to be considered erroneous. These include:

  • 1. If the seven-digit phone number = ‘5551212’ (area-code-wide information number), the number is considered unusable, since it must pertain to the account itself.
  • 2. If the exchange (the first three digits of the phone number) is ‘000’, it is not a valid phone number.
  • 3. If the area code is not numeric, but also not blank, the phone number is unusable because the area code cannot be interpreted.
  • 4. Finally, the phone number is considered unusable if the suffix (the last four digits of the phone number) is neither numeric nor blank.

If any of these situations is found, the program will flag the phone number and underscore it in the edit report. As mentioned earlier, the lower-employment establishments will use any of the conditions found above to remove the phone number completely. BLS classification: C.1.8. EXPO “G” code: C105.
