Taxable Wage Indicator (IMTQ-TAXW-IND(1))

This is the indicator flag for the current quarter's taxable wages, a 1-byte field at position 783, having most of the same values as IMTQ-M1-IND(1) and the same value setting method as is described for IMTQ-M1-EMPL(1). Four values (‘A’, ‘D’, ‘S’, and ‘W’) are omitted, however. The reasons for these omissions appear below.

The ‘A’ value is missing from the valid settings because it deals with data obtained from the ACES (Automated Current Employment Statistics) system. ACES supplies employment data only, so it is useless to this field.

The ‘D’ is not needed because missing data notices are used most often to solicit employment data, when wages have already been reported. Rarely, there may be a missing data notice prepared for an employer that is missing total wages, but has reported employment. In no case would taxable wages be requested.

The ‘S’ indicator is reserved for employment and total wages of master accounts, summing reported worksite values. Since the taxable wages and contributions are generally not gathered at the worksite level, they cannot be summed into an “S” estimate.

The ‘W’ value is for summed wage record data (employee count or total wages). Taxable wages are not listed in the summed wage record data. Therefore, this value could never be considered valid.
